How To Adopt A Winners Mindset

Updated: May 2, 2020

How you choose to react is everything! I firmly believe that people have the ability to decide to be calm, present and content, most of the time. You can practice strategies to be happy, but you need to remember “shit” happens! If you want to bring more joy to this world you should do everything in your power to let it in.

Doing things of value and striving to have meaning really helps in becoming a winner, a high performer. Typically, this means that you are doing something for someone that is counting on you to perform. Find “your” why and you are half-way there.

It helps to enjoy what you are doing and that natural energy boost/absence of fatigue when doing it, that’s passion. Now, not all of us necessarily enjoy what we are currently doing, nor have a passion for it, but that is no excuse for doing the best possible job that you can do. Taking pride in who you are and what you are doing, regardless of how glamourous what you are doing is, will make you stand out amongst the crowd.

One of the biggest problems people battle with is being worried about what someone else has, compared to them. Stop looking over your neighbours’ fence! It stunts progress and gets people caught up in a negative spiral really quickly.

This is where the concept of ‘controlling the controllables’ come into play. You should only be concerned with what you can control. If it is outside of your control, you acknowledge it, but you should not spend any energy worrying about it. Your focus should shift to what you can do to put yourself in the position you want to be in. You should want to win in a way that you have not brought everyone else down, but you were good enough to outperform everyone else. You need to drop that famine mentality and pick up a growth mindset. With a growth mindset, you always have the ability to learn, adapt and get better. You take on criticism with a strong sense of gratitude. It is humility at its finest. If your focus is “I’m just enjoying the process” or at least are trying to, you have already won.

Now ask yourself the following questions:

In what ways am I currently, and can I bring joy and satisfaction into my life on a consistent basis?

Who am I surrounding myself with who are helping me become a better version of myself?

How can I bring more joy and satisfaction to those around me?

Act in the way you want to be portrayed and people will treat you accordingly. If they do not show you the time and patience that you deserve, do not get mad and drop to their level, have empathy and consider that they are holding all this negativity inside of them and perhaps they need a good example to learn from.

The value of having good people around you is enormous. The stronger and more genuine connections that you work on and develop, the better off you will be. If those people are positive, have mastery skills beyond yours and are willing to tell you the truth, then those relationships are invaluable. In your area of passion or development, I would strongly suggest you seek out a mentor who is where you want to be or has been there. Check-in with them at least once a month.

Now all of this is great, but it means nothing if you are not willing to put in the work to get there. Becoming a winner comes with a lot of hard work. Time spent learning, studying, practising and becoming masterful at what you want is necessary to get you there. Put the work in and you will get the results.
